Anxiety disorder

Anxiety disorder

Anxiety Disorder -is a mental disorder characterized by a general sustained anxiety, without certain objects or situations.

Anxiety is a reaction to perceived danger. People who are prone to the development of anxious reactions are persistently distorted in the process of perception and processing of information, as a result of which they consider themselves incapable of coping with the threat and controlling the environment. The attention of anxious patients is selectively directed to the possible danger. Patients with this disease, on the one hand, are firmly convinced that anxiety is some kind of effective mechanism that allows them to adapt to the situation, and on the other hand, regard their anxiety as uncontrollable and dangerous. This combination, as it were, closes the “vicious circle” of constant anxiety.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is characterized by anxiety:

– persistent (a period of at least six months);

-generalized (marked tension, anxiety and feeling of upcoming troubles in everyday events and problems, various fears, worries, bad forebodings);

-infixed (not limited to any specific circumstances).

There are 3 characteristic groups of symptoms of anxiety disorder:

-Stability and fears that the patient is difficult to control and which lasts longer than usual. This concern is generalized and does not focus on individual problems

– Muscle tension, tremor, inability to relax, headache (often in the frontal and occipital areas).

– Hyperactivity of the autonomic nervous system, which is expressed by increased sweating, increased frequency of heartbeats, dry mouth, discomfort in the stomach and dizziness.

Other psychological symptoms of anxiety disorder are irritability, poor concentration of attention and sensitivity to noise. Some patients, when they are tested for the ability to concentrate, complain of a bad memory. If a memory impairment is actually detected, then a thorough psychological examination should be carried out to treat the primary disease of the cerebral cortex. Other symptoms are aching muscle pains and muscle strains, especially the muscles of the back and shoulder area. Many people with anxiety disorders also suffer from depression. Anxiety and depression are supposed to be associated with the same psycho-emotional vulnerability, so they so often go together. Since depression exacerbates anxiety (and vice versa), it is important to seek psychological help in both cases.
